          How bright are tower lights?

Tower lights are one of the most convenient, practical, affordable and effective ways to light up railways.

They are widely used on railways, particularly in areas where renovation or repair work is being completed, which needs to take place at night (when the tracks aren’t in use).

But, one of the most common questions that our team gets asked is, ‘How bright are tower lights?’. And that’s fair enough. After all, they have to be bright enough for teams to work on large project areas, in the middle of the night!

So, to shed light on this common query, we’ve used this post to explain how tower lights are used on railways, and how well they illuminate the working area.

Above is an image of a tower light in action, providing ample light for late night construction projects.

          What are tower lights?

Also known as lighting towers, tower lights are a mobile lighting solution, featuring a tall mast and a number of high-powered (either LED or hybrid) lights.

Tower lights also consist of four adjustable stabilisers and a level indicator, so that the tower can easily be positioned, used and moved across the required area. This includes safe, efficient and seamless use on different terrains and uneven ground.

These solutions also come with complete on road tow trailers, to ensure easy transport and on-site use.

As a result, they are commonly used to illuminate large outdoor spaces, particularly in construction and renovation project work.

          How bright are tower lights?

Tower lights are extremely bright, and can illuminate large outdoor areas with ease.

In fact, some tower light units offer 80,000 to 440,000 lumens of light.

Different types of tower lights offer different brightness levels, but your lighting supplier will work with you to find the solution that best suits your specific project.

Either way, tower lights are significantly brighter than traditional lighting solutions (like metal halide, for example). This is because modern LEDs or hybrid lighting are more sophisticated technologies, which achieve far greater brightness.

What’s more, they are also a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly solution than traditional lighting. In fact, some models boast fuel and CO2 savings of up to 94% (compared to older varieties of site lighting).

Here at Triptex, we even have a range of solar powered tower lights for hire.

What are the benefits of using tower lights for railway projects?

Tower lights are ideally suited for railway projects, and are a fantastic choice for this type of site work.

The benefits of using lighting towers include (but aren’t limited to):

          • They are much brighter than your typical site lighting (thanks to power LED bulbs)
          • Thanks to their high levels of brightness (and ability to fully illuminate the working area) they ensure maximum safety standards for your site. They also fully illuminate any hazardous areas
          • They are quick and easy to move or re-position
          • Tower lights make night projects just as effective and efficient as they would be in the day. Alternatively, they allow projects set for the daytime to extend their working hours. This is key for projects with tight deadlines
          • They ensure your project is fully compliant with all relevant safety regulations
          • They help your project team to work as accurately and precisely as possible
          • The light’s intensity and direction can easily be adjusted
          • They are extremely resistant to all weather conditions, and can also withstand challenging temperatures

At Triptex, we are railway safety specialists, offering a wide range of state-of-the-art solutions. This includes the dependable supply of tower lights to sites across the UK.

We are the trusted supplier of some of the UK’s biggest railway brands, including the likes of South Eastern, Volker Rail, KIER, Vinci Construction, and many more.
