At this year’s Rail Safety Summit, we saw experts from across the industry come together to share their unique insights and the latest innovations in the railway safety sphere.
In fact, as the first time that the event has been held in-person since 2019, the entire industry was particularly excited about this year’s summit.
Event Review: Rail Safety Summit March 2023
The Rail Safety Summit is a highly influential and eagerly anticipated annual industry event, and this year was no different.
The conference took place on the 14th of March, at Loughborough’s Holywell Park.
Throughout the day, leading railway speakers took to the stage, to share their insights into new railway safety products and services, alongside the latest developments across all aspects of the industry.
The day’s speakers included:
- Marian Kelly, Head of SHE at London Underground
- Nick Millington MBE, Safety Task Force Director at Network Rail
- Rupert Lown, Chief Health & Safety Officer at Network Rail
- Ian Prosser, HM Chief Inspector of Railways and Director of Railway Safety at the Office of Rail Regulation
- Leo Scott Smith, CEO at Tended
- James Le Grice, Head of Rail Safety and Standards at the Department for Transport
- Andrew Hall, Chief Inspector at the Rail Accident Investigation Branch
- Peter Dearman CEng FPWI FIET FIMechE, Independent Consultant at Dearman Engineering (and Former Engineering Director of Atkins)
- John Jebson, OHSE Director at McGinley
- Prof Sarah Sharples, Professor of Human Factors at Nottingham University
- Ali Chegini, Director of System Safety & Health at RSSB
The speakers list also included Colin Wheeler, a Civil Engineer and RailStaff Writer at Rail Media. Colin has been a Rail Engineer since 1967 and, in addition to his content writing work, he is also a Trustee of the Robert Stephenson Trust.
The conference saw these industry experts present their findings and share their insights on the main stage. The topics that were discussed included everything from the consideration of mental health to rail safety from the perspective of transport systems, and geofencing to the government’s role in rail safety.
Alongside these diverse keynotes, a wide variety of companies were also exhibiting throughout the day in the dedicated networking area, showcasing the latest developments in railway safety products and services.
